METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Description of methods used for collection/generation of data:
Figure4.5 - LN waveguide model was built in FIMMWAVE, using a finite difference mode solver, using Sellmeier values given by Gayer(https://doi.org/10.1007/s00340-008-2998-2) and a script was used to iterate over refractive index parameters and save the vertical MFD values
Figure4.6 - A Metricon Model 2010 prism coupler, with a P2 prism, was used to measure the effective indices of supported modes at 532nm. Measurements of the effective indices and bulk refractive index were taken at several different spots for each sample
Figure4.7 - A Metricon Model 2010 prism coupler, with a P2 prism, was used to measure the effective indices of supported modes at 1064nm. Measurements of the effective indices and bulk refractive index were taken at several different spots for each sample
Figure4.8 - 1560nm TM light was butt-coupled from fibre into the TM fundamental waveguide mode, and MFD was measured using the beam profiler described in Chapter 5 of the thesis found at https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/455861/. For vertical(planar) MFD values the measurement was taken at several points on a non-diced sample

Methods for processing the data:
Figure4.5 - FIMMWAVE ouput MFD values directly, where the MFD was set to 1/e^2 of the mode intensity
Figure4.6 - An average of the effective indices was calculated, and the refractive index change and indiffusion depth values were processed as described in Section 4.1.1 of the thesis
Figure4.7 - An average of the effective indices was calculated, and the refractive index change and indiffusion depth values were processed as described in Section 4.1.1 of the thesis
Figure4.8 - The beam profiler LabView software outputs w0 values for the measured mode, where MFD=2*w0
